About

What is CCSVI?

Chronic CerebroSpinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI) refers to the obstruction of veins draining the brain or spine. The phrase was first coined in 2009 by Professor Paolo Zamboni in the research paper Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Investigations of CCSVI at the Alfred Hospital (Melbourne) found that many people with MS have obstructions in the internal jugular veins (approx. 80%). Impairment of these veins may prevent adequate drainage of blood from the brain. More can be read about this research in CCSVI Australia’s annual reports.

Who is CCSVI Australia?

CCSVI Australia Inc. was established in 2012 by a group of people in Australia who had an experience of being tested and treated for venous abnormalities with a desire to see the vascular connection to MS further understood.

We are all volunteers who have MS, or love someone who does.

CCSVI Australia is a registered charity with the following Purpose:

To remain abreast of international advances in the understanding and treatment of Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI) and associated discoveries.

To supply accurate information to all interested parties including, but not limited to,

a.      those seeking testing for, and treatment of, CCSVI

b.      medical researchers and practitioners

c.       government at all levels

d.      related community-support organisations.

To lobby for treatment of CCSVI to be readily available to all Australians and for the costs to be covered by Medicare.
